The project


3DTeLC aims to develop 3D and Virtual Reality products to manage Natural Risk, through Teaching, Learning and Communication experiences. Aerial and submarine photography are combined to create 3D models, which are displayed in Virtual Reality and used for a plethora of Natural Risk applications.


We develop and we train, we cooperate and we reach out (boldly) to where no person has virtually gone before.

The Workflow used was adapted from the basic 3DTeLC Workflow for the specific conditions and needs of Lemptégy.


Background to the project


There is a demand for highly-skilled professionals in the environmental and geoscience sectors, who can be innovative, creative with skills in advanced 3D spatial analysis, multi-disciplinarity, data management and informatics, mathematical and numerical skills, fieldwork and observations skills, earth observation and image analysis. This European project seeks to tackle these shortages through a programme of data sharing, scientific and technical collaboration and ultimately curriculum development at postgraduate level focused around the study of onshore and offshore natural hazards. The aim of the project is to develop a series of very high resolution 3D virtual reality models of natural hazards observed in the onshore and offshore environment using data acquired from airborne drone and submersible platforms that can be used in classrooms to teach about onshore and offshore environments as a continuum. To facilitate this, the project aims to develop a series of freely available tool kits, teaching materials and datasets that will allow students to navigate these environments using virtual reality headsets, map and measure features on the ground surface and seabed to simulate real field mapping activities, to export and then integrate these with other spatial datasets.


Who is funding this project?


This is a three year innovation project, funded by the Erasmus+ Key Action 2 programme: Cooperation for Innovation and Exchange of Good Practices, a European scheme that fosters higher education partnerships. A list of successful projects in the 2017 round can be found here.
